SCHOOL WELLNESS POLICY

Mission Statement:  To establish environments that increase health awareness, promote positive lifestyles, decrease the risk of disease, and enhance the quality of life for students and district personnel.

  • The district will engage students, parents, staff, food service professionals, health professionals and other interested community members in developing and implementing, monitoring, and reviewing a district-wide nutrition and physical activity policy.
  • All students will be given opportunities, support, and encouragement to be physically active on a regular basis.
  • Food and beverages sold or served by the District, during school hours, will meet the nutritional recommendations of the United States Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
  • The District will provide nutritional and physical education to foster lifelong habits of healthy eating and physical activity.

I.  SCHOOL DISTRICT WELLNESS COMMITTEE

The School District Health council will consist of the Superintendent or designee, the Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics, food Services Director, a female students representative, a male student representative and others as deemed necessary.

II.  NUTRITIONAL QUALITY OF FOODS AND BEVERAGES SOLD AND SERVED ON CAMPUS

A.  The Waverly Child Nutritional Program will:

  1. Meet, at minimum, the nutritional requirements (RDA) established by state and federal regulations.
  2. Offer a variety of fruit and vegetables.
  3. Participate in the National Breakfast and Lunch programs.
  4. Support all efforts to eliminate any overt identification of students participating in the Free/Reduced price meal program.
  5. Encourage staff development and training of employees in child nutrition.
  6. Ensure all vending sales (milk, juice, etc.) are under the control of the Child Nutrition Program.  Under chapter 647 of New York State Law, the sale of candy or soda of any type cannot be sold to students anywhere in school building from the beginning of the school day until the end of the school day.
  7. Ensure that no food is sold in the school buildings furing the breakfast or lunch periods in competition with the National School Breakfast/Lunch Program.
  8. We recommend that there be a maximum of two servings per meal per day per student.

B.  Nutritional recommendations for food being sold in our school buildings:

  1. Fat:  7 grams or less per serving
  2. Saturated Fat:  2 grams or less per serving
  3. Sodium:  360 ml or less per serving
  4. Sugar:  15 grams or less per serving

C.  Food Safety

  1. Foods brought into school for group use must be prepared in a food service establishment which is permitted to prepare and sell foods.  No home prepared items are allowed to be shared.
  2. All foods in school buildings must adhere to all food safety and security guidelines.
  3. Food Service areas will be restricted to child nutrition staff and authorized personnel in order to ensure food safety and to secure the facility food service areas.

D.  Snacks

  1. Snacks served during the school day or in after-school or enrichment programs will make a positive contribution to children's diets and health.
  2. The District will disseminate a list of healthful snack items to teachers, after-school program personnel, and parents.  These lists will be available on the District website and the school newsletter.

III.  NUTRITION AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PROMOTION

A.  Nutrition Education and Promotion:  The district aims to teach, encourage and support healthy eating habits of students by:

  1. Offering at each grade level a standards-based program that provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote and protect their health.  This will be accomplished through health education classes and potentially integrated into math, ELA, science, social sciences, physical education and other electives.
  2. Promoting the consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grain products, low-fat and fat-free dairy products, healthy food preparation methods and health-enhancing nutrition practices.
  3. Making training available for teachers and other staff recommending that a portion of each conference day be dedicated to effectively deliver quality wellness education.
  4. Providing educational information and encouraging healthy eating and physical activity for families, both within the home and outside the home.  This information will be available on the district website and school newsletters, district calendar and student assembly.

B.  Staff Wellness:  The district supports and values the health and well-being of every staff memeber by:

  1. Offering an Employee Assistance Program.
  2. Offering a Comprehensive Health Insurance Program.
  3. Encourage local fitness centers to offer employee discount to Waverly Central School District Employees.
  4. Supporting a District Wellness Committee.

IV.  PHYSICAL ACTIVITY OPPORTUNITIES AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

A.  Physical Education K-12

  1. All students in grades K-12 will receive physical education that meets the New York State Department of Education mandates and aligns to the New York State Standards.
  2. All physical education will be taught by a certified physical education teacher.

B.  Daily Wellness Activity Goals

  1. Students should have supervised daily wellness activity goals, preferably outdoors, during which, students will be encouraged to engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity.
  2. The district should provide space, equipment, and personnel for supervised daily wellness activity.

C.  Physical Activity Opportunities Before and After School

  1. The elementary schools, the middle school, and the high school should offer extracurricular activity programs that meet the needs, interest and abilities of all students.
  2. The high school and middle school should offer, as appropriate, interscholastic sports programs.
  3. In-district after-school childcare and enrichment programs should encourage physical activity for all participants.  Space and equipment is provided for such activity.

V.  MONITORING AND EVALUATION

A.  The Superintendent of Schools or designee will ensure that schools are meeting reqquirements of the established wellness policy.  Others in the District who are responsible to the superintendent for ensuring compliance of the various components of the established wellness policy are:

  1. Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics, and the Building Principals for nutrition education and physical activity.
  2. Food Services director for nutrition policies within the school food service areas.

 



High School News
BAND BOOSTERS
The Band Booster Club will meet on Monday,  November 3rd, at 7:30 in the band room.
REPORT CARDS
The first marking period ends Friday, November 7th.  Report cards will be sent home on or around Friday, November 14th.
VETERAN'S DAY
School will be closed Tuesday, November 11th, in observance of Veteran's Day.
THANKSGIVING BREAK
School will be closed Wednesday, November 26th - Friday, November 28th, for Thanksgiving break.  Classes will resume Monday, December 1st.
SEMI-FORMAL SNOWBALL
The semi-formal Snowball will be held Saturday, December 6th, in the Middle School gym from 7:30 - 11:30.
FINANCIAL AID NIGHT
Financial Aid Night will be held on Monday, December 8th, at 6:30 pm in the Middle School cafeteria.
