The PSAT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is going to be given at Waverly High School on Tuesday, October 22nd. The exam will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will take approximately 3 hours to complete. The exam is on a first come first serve basis as we have a limited number of exams. The exam is open to Juniors and Sophomores. Priority will be given to the Junior class.
Students that are interested in taking the exam can sign up in the Guidance Department. The deadline to sign up is Monday, September 23rd at 3:00 p.m.
The fee for the PSAT exam is $18.00. Students can pay by cash or check. If you are paying by check, it can be made payable to "The Waverly Central School District."
What Is the PSAT?
The PSAT/NMSQT (short for Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is an opportunity for students to practice for the SAT. You can take the PSAT a total of three times in high school but only once per year. Most students take the test their Junior year, with some taking it as a Sophomore as well.
PSAT scores are designed to predict your SAT scores and gauge your college readiness. By taking the PSAT, you will learn which areas you should focus on when studying for the SAT and will be better equipped to score well on the SAT.
The PSAT is also the qualifying test for a National Merit Scholarship. Juniors who take the test must score in the top 1% to move on as semifinalists for National Merit Scholarships. Please reach out to your Guidance Counselor with any questions.
Kind Regards,
The Waverly Guidance Department

On Friday, September 20th, Mr. Brent Doane from Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3) will be visiting Waverly to present information about the Early Degree/Associate's Degree program. This will take place in the High School Cafeteria from 2:30-3:10. Students in grades 9-11 that are interested in attending to learn more about earning their Early Degree should sign up in the Guidance Department by Thursday, 9/19 at 3:00 p.m. The presentation is also open to any parents/guardians that would like to learn more about the Early Degree.
Early Degree is an option for ambitious high school students to complete the requirements for an Associate’s Degree while in high school. Early Degree students combine Concurrent Enrollment courses with CollegeNow Online courses, and occasionally on-campus and Advanced Placement courses, to fulfill an Associate’s Degree’s 60+ credits. Most courses are concurrent enrollment courses taken at the high school, allowing students to simultaneously earn high school and college credit for the same course. Requirements unavailable at the high school are taken online or on campus.
Early Degree is an academically rigorous option that appeals to mature, highly motivated students. The average Early Degree student graduates with honors from Tompkins Cortland with an average GPA of 3.54. Those who pursue the Early Degree should be certain of their college major and career goals, skilled at time management, ready to enter college at junior-level coursework, and willing to dedicate the required time, energy, and money to earning the required credits.
A few college-credit courses may be available to students in their freshman or sophomore year. However, most courses are for juniors and seniors. CollegeNow Online courses are also for qualified juniors and seniors. (With their guidance counselor’s recommendation, students may begin online courses the summer after sophomore year.)
To learn more about the Early Degree Program through TC3, you may visit https://www.tompkinscortland.edu/academics/early-degree.

SAT registration is open for the 2024-25 testing year. Many colleges consider SAT scores as part of their holistic admission and placement decisions, and your score is a valid way to show what you've learned. Most juniors take their first SAT in the spring, and many take it again in the fall of their senior year to improve their score. It can help you keep your college options open, demonstrate your unique strengths, and even qualify for scholarships. Register at www.collegeboard.org. *Please Note - Waverly is not a testing site. Students may take the SAT exam at a surrounding school district (Sayre, Athens, Tioga, etc.) **When registering for an SAT exam, students must enter Waverly's CEEB Code number which is 335845 so that we can receive your scores. ***SAT scores are entered on a student's transcript. If student's do not want their scores on their transcript, the Guidance Department must have written permission from a parent/guardian to have them removed. Please be advised that Colleges and Universities may ask that your SAT scores be sent officially even if you request that they are taken off of your high school transcript. Please contact your Guidance Counselor with questions.

Waverly High School Students and Parents:
Welcome to August! We are preparing for a great start to the new school year!
August Regents:
On Wednesday, any student needing to retake a Regents exam was mailed an information letter. You should receive them any day in the mail. Please let us know as soon as possible if you are in fact retaking an August exam. If you choose not to retest in August, Regents exams will be held again in January 2025.
24-25 Schedules:
A student mailing for Grades 10-12 is being mailed today and Grade 9 will be mailed next week!
In this mailing, there is a welcome letter and a tentative schedule. As class balancing and changes are made over the next few weeks, there may be slight changes, however, we have made every effort to include courses that each child has selected.
Depending on a student's grade level, there will also be other paperwork in the envelope.
Juniors and Seniors will have parking registration forms.
Seniors who are eligible (based on 2023-24 grades) for Open Campus privileges will have paperwork also.
Junior Open Campus will not begin until after the first grade reporting period in October.
EVERY student is getting a registration form that needs to be completed and returned to the high school main office. Please take the time to complete this so that we have all the correct contact information.
New this year: We encourage you to add a student's cell phone number on this registration form. At the high school level, it often becomes more efficient at times to communicate directly with the student from the main office.
We hope you are enjoying summer!
Mrs. Hunt, Mrs. Picco, and Mr. Marilley

Waverly Central School District, like most other school districts around the country, is experiencing a shortage of bus drivers. The district is actively pursuing motivated individuals 21 or older who would like to join our transportation team. Waverly CSD pays for all driver training, and the substitute pay is very competitive. Also, most of our subs eventually roll into full-time employment with great benefits! Without new people coming on board to drive buses for the Waverly School District, our staff will continue to decrease in numbers which means less transportation opportunities for our students. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a bus driver for the Waverly Central School District, please contact Transportation Director Rich McIntosh by phone at 607-565-8114 or through email at rmcintosh@wcsdletsgo.com.
