The SAT exam (Scholastic Aptitude Test) is going to be given at Waverly High School on Tuesday, October 29th. The exam will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will take approximately 3 hours to complete. The exam is on a first come first serve basis as we have a limited number of exams.
The fee for the SAT exam is $68. Students can pay by cash or check. If you are paying by check, it can be made payable to "The Waverly Central School District."
The SAT is a standardized test used by many colleges and universities in the United States—including those that are test optional. It’s used for admissions, financial aid, placement, and other purposes. The primary benefit of taking the SAT is that it gives colleges a standardized measure of your academic abilities. With those scores, most colleges and universities can compare students from different schools and backgrounds on a level field. While the SAT isn’t the only factor that colleges consider in the admissions process, it’s a valuable tool that can demonstrate your academic abilities and improve your chances of being admitted to your desired college or university. It’s a more objective measure than extracurricular activities, teacher recommendations, or college application essays.
Although some four-year colleges don’t require an admission test score as part of your application, the test strengthens your college application nearly everywhere. Most U.S. colleges and universities accept the SAT. If you’re not sure which college you want to attend, it’s a good idea to take the test. You can decide at a later time whether or not to submit your scores with your application.
Remember that an average test score is just that ─ an average. Don't be afraid to apply to a college that seems right for you even if its average score is higher or lower than yours. Talk to your school counselor about whether or not you should submit your scores.
Some colleges and educational organizations award scholarship money to students based in part on SAT scores.
By opting in to the Student Search Service when you register for the weekend SAT, you can receive free information from colleges and scholarship programs. This can help you to discover a good match. Depending on your school, district, or state, if you take the SAT in school on a school day you can opt-into the Connections(TM) feature of the free BigFuture School mobile app that also allows you to hear from colleges that might be a good match.
Students that are interested in taking the exam can sign up in the Guidance Department. The deadline to sign up is Monday, September 23rd at 3:00 p.m.

The PSAT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is going to be given at Waverly High School on Tuesday, October 22nd. The exam will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will take approximately 3 hours to complete. The exam is on a first come first serve basis as we have a limited number of exams. The exam is open to Juniors and Sophomores. Priority will be given to the Junior class.
Students that are interested in taking the exam can sign up in the Guidance Department. The deadline to sign up is Monday, September 23rd at 3:00 p.m.
The fee for the PSAT exam is $18.00. Students can pay by cash or check. If you are paying by check, it can be made payable to "The Waverly Central School District."
What Is the PSAT?
The PSAT/NMSQT (short for Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is an opportunity for students to practice for the SAT. You can take the PSAT a total of three times in high school but only once per year. Most students take the test their Junior year, with some taking it as a Sophomore as well.
PSAT scores are designed to predict your SAT scores and gauge your college readiness. By taking the PSAT, you will learn which areas you should focus on when studying for the SAT and will be better equipped to score well on the SAT.
The PSAT is also the qualifying test for a National Merit Scholarship. Juniors who take the test must score in the top 1% to move on as semifinalists for National Merit Scholarships. To learn more about the National Merit Scholarship, you may visit https://www.nationalmerit.org/s/1758/start.aspx?gid=2&pgid=61.

On Friday, September 20th, Mr. Brent Doane from Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3) will be visiting Waverly to present information about the Early Degree/Associate's Degree program. This will take place in the High School Cafeteria from 2:30-3:10. Students in grades 9-11 that are interested in attending to learn more about earning their Early Degree should sign up in the Guidance Department by Thursday, 9/19 at 3:00 p.m. The presentation is also open to any parents/guardians that would like to learn more about the Early Degree.
Early Degree is an option for ambitious high school students to complete the requirements for an Associate’s Degree while in high school. Early Degree students combine Concurrent Enrollment courses with CollegeNow Online courses, and occasionally on-campus and Advanced Placement courses, to fulfill an Associate’s Degree’s 60+ credits. Most courses are concurrent enrollment courses taken at the high school, allowing students to simultaneously earn high school and college credit for the same course. Requirements unavailable at the high school are taken online or on campus.
Early Degree is an academically rigorous option that appeals to mature, highly motivated students. The average Early Degree student graduates with honors from Tompkins Cortland with an average GPA of 3.54. Those who pursue the Early Degree should be certain of their college major and career goals, skilled at time management, ready to enter college at junior-level coursework, and willing to dedicate the required time, energy, and money to earning the required credits.
A few college-credit courses may be available to students in their freshman or sophomore year. However, most courses are for juniors and seniors. CollegeNow Online courses are also for qualified juniors and seniors. (With their guidance counselor’s recommendation, students may begin online courses the summer after sophomore year.)
To learn more about the Early Degree Program through TC3, you may visit https://www.tompkinscortland.edu/academics/early-degree.

Welcome to September and Happy Labor Day!
Waverly CSD welcomes our teachers and staff back to school tomorrow and Wednesday for conference days.
Doors open for HS students at 7:45am on Thursday, Sept. 5th. We can’t wait to see you all!
On Thursday, students will find their name posted on lists throughout the first floor- indicating their 1st period class. At that room, students will receive a colored FINAL copy of their schedule. This colored schedule should be the one the student follows.
Lockers must be used at all times this year by students for their backpacks and belongings. Students will not be allowed to carry a backpack during the school day. The only exception will be for those with temporary medical conditions (approved by an administrator), or those who have a medical note/exemption from a doctor on file.
All students should have received a summer mailing with a locker number and combination printed on the tentative schedule. Those students who did not receive a mailing- or an assigned locker- should call or stop by the main office during the open hours on 9/3 or 9/4.
A preliminary High school course supply list can be found on the website or at this link: https://www.waverlyschools.com/o/whs/page/supply-lists
Or students may choose to wait and see what the specific class needs after the first couple of days with the teacher.
This year laptops will not be sent home daily. Instead, each student will have a charging station assigned to them where they will pick it up each morning and drop it off before leaving each day. Specific instances where the laptop is needed for nightly assignments or online coursework will be made and the students will sign them out individually. More information will be given to students on the first day.
Just a reminder- the High School building will be open for students to locate their classrooms and try out their lockers and combinations on:
Tuesday 9/3 from 12-3pm
Wednesday 9/4 from 8-11am.
Students must check in (and check out) at the welcome table in the main lobby if they are in the building for these open hours.
There are Parent Information Nights scheduled:

SAT registration is open for the 2024-25 testing year. Many colleges consider SAT scores as part of their holistic admission and placement decisions, and your score is a valid way to show what you've learned. Most juniors take their first SAT in the spring, and many take it again in the fall of their senior year to improve their score. It can help you keep your college options open, demonstrate your unique strengths, and even qualify for scholarships. Register at www.collegeboard.org. *Please Note - Waverly is not a testing site. Students may take the SAT exam at a surrounding school district (Sayre, Athens, Tioga, etc.) **When registering for an SAT exam, students must enter Waverly's CEEB Code number which is 335845 so that we can receive your scores. ***SAT scores are entered on a student's transcript. If student's do not want their scores on their transcript, the Guidance Department must have written permission from a parent/guardian to have them removed. Please be advised that Colleges and Universities may ask that your SAT scores be sent officially even if you request that they are taken off of your high school transcript. Please contact your Guidance Counselor with questions.
